what spotting telescope should I buy for bird watching, preferably under £300?

This would be a present for someone else, and it is not something I know anything about, so I’d be really glad to have some suggestions!

Check out Orions line of scopes. They have a good reputation for quality. This one seems to be well within your budget. You’d be under even if you add in a camera adapter.
A consideration might be what kind of bird watching they will be doing.
A tripod and a spotting scope such at this one are good for next watching or setting up in a blind. If your hiking and want one to carry around the woods, a lower magnification and lighter model would be less cumbersome.
