What is a good bird house or bird treat to put outside in the trees?

I leave near a trail and noticed a lot of cardinal, and thought I could put out a small bird house or bird seeds, but what would attract these type of birds. I would like to hide something in the trees so only I know it is there.

I’m not sure what attracts those particular birds, but I know that there are many things birds like such as cheese, porridge oats, and any type of cooked meat or potato so you could try putting some of them out.

Cardinal like black sunflower seeds.. they need a perch to stand on to get the best results.

Being that its getting chilly.. or COLD like it is here.. I have hung up a suet feeder, Its beef fat mixed with seed and it helps the bird lay down fat to keep warm.

Some bigger birds like peanuts!

you can also put peanut butter on a pine cone and then roll the cone in seed and hang it up in a tree.. the birds love this too.

We just moved and out new apt backs up to a large wooded area! I have hung 3 different feeders and just LOVE watching the birds. I am learning too what types of feed to put out, I have told you what the folks at the wild bird store told me!

enjoy!

I remember from a show that birds like peanut butter.Maybe you could put bird seeds on the tree stuck with pb.

Cardinals nest in thickets and thickly branched trees, they do not use a birdhouse, so that particular species would not be attracted by a birdhouse. Also, birds use birdhouses to nest, not to sleep in year-round, so birdhouses (also known as nesting boxes) are best put up in the spring, right before nesting season.

Roosting boxes are good to put up in the winter, to help the birds shelter from winds and snow and keep warm, but - again - cardinals do not use them, so it would be for other species. If you are interested, you can check here for instructions: http://birding.about.com/library/weekly/aa123102a.htm

Cardinals love black sunflower seeds, peanut bits and cracked corn. You can find out more about cardinals here: http://birding.about.com/od/birdscardinals/a/northerncardina.htm

and here, you can read about them and listen to them: http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?allSpecies=&searchText=cardinal&GroupID=&curGroupID=1&lgfromWhere=&curPageNum=1

edit - I just went back and re-read your question…you want something small, that only you will know is there…try nailing a small ledge to a tree, maybe a pine tree, so it will be well-hidden, and place some peanuts, cracked corn or black sunflower seeds there…but expect the chipmunks, squirrels, and a dozen species of birds in addition to your cardinals to find it. That’s the problem with feeding birds - there is no way to feed just one species of bird. Many birds enjoy the same foods.
