What has been your best birding experience ever?

You can name any type of wild bird experience anywhere in the world. For example, you can mention places like Seaworld, The National Aviary in Pittsburgh, any wildlife refuge, any state parks, and wildlife sanctuaries, and much more. I’d enjoy hearing about a variety of locations and a variety of birds. Anything will do. Even if it’s something near where you live, mention it anyway. I love hearing about other people’s birding experiences.

when me and my wife were young, we would go picnicking at the Sydney national park. using the same spot, we had a frequent visitor, a wild kookaburra, which was timid at first, but with great patience, we made to come even closer and finally eating from our hands and staying for a while.
another was in a Queensland bird sanctuary, where we had an emu follow us and let us stroke it and caress it, it wouldn’t go away.
love the memories, quite back, 25 - 30 years.

Judt having a pet bird is the greatest expierience i could have. seeing the baby birds hatch and playing with them was wonderful.

I used to live in South Florida, and when the Miami MetroZoo opened, it had this HUGE free-flight aviary, full of all kinds of exotic birds living in a rainforest-like habitat. There were scrub jays (yes, I know, not exotic, but still) that were so tame, they could come down out of the trees and follow you around, waiting for a hand-out.
There were hornbills and minahs that flew freely in this enormous structure that wasn’t cage-like at all (it was like a huge mesh tent). I used to go to the zoo almost every weekend, and never missed an opportunity to go into that big tent.
I moved away from Florida in 1990 and a couple of years later, when Hurricane Andrew hit down there, it demolished the aviary and most of the birds escaped.

Some of my most notable birds include:

endangered Whooping Cranes seen in Florida
Painted Buntings seen in Arizona
Mexican Spotted Owl seen in Mexico
King Eiders seen in the Arctic in Alaska
Great Gray Owl seen in Canada
discovering the first breeding record (nest) for an Allens Hummingbird in the Central Valley of California.

I also work with 3 endangered bird species: Least Bell’s Vireo, Southwestern Willow Flycatcher, and the California Gnatcatcher. I see all sorts of neat bird behaviors and things while out working. I also have a pair of Burrowing Owls near the wetlands where my office is located and I love driving by them and seeing them sitting next to their burrow with their heads following the movement of my car. They are extremely cute and they always make me smile when I am fortunate enough to see them.

Hmm, let’s see. I’m not going to use chickens like I was going to because I see them every day. Oh! I know! A few years back I went to my first bird show. It was really awesome! They had a huge variety of birds there from doves to owls, and parrots to hawks. I saw an owl there for the first time, and it was huge! I never knew they could get so big. Sadly though, I forget the name of it. I wish I could remember because it was a really pretty brown and dark brown color, and had yellow eyes. I’m sure that really doesn’t say much though because I’m guessing a lot of owls look similar. After the bird show I got to take a picture with it, but I couldn’t pet it like I wanted to because the owner was afraid it would bite me. Well, that’s my story, and I’ll never forget that owl!

A place where I have gone had beautiful birds. I used to go there every year. It is in Pidgeon Fordge, Tennessee, at Dollywood Themepark. They have the most pretty Bald Eagles. that have like over 50 that they breed their. You should check it out sometime.

There was a mockingbird in our neighborhood for a few summers that mimicked a ringing telephone very well. He had everyone running to their homes to answer a non-existent telephone call–including me, until I got wise.
