Product Description
There are more than 76 million birdwatchers in America — from casual backyard observers to seasoned birders. At some point, every bird-watcher has a question not answered in traditional field guides. How many feathers does a bird have? Do birds sleep while in flight?
When such questions arise, birders turn to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the world’s leading authority on birds and an information clearinghouse for bird-watchers of all levels. Now, the lab’s most often-asked questions about bird behavior are answered in a concise, friendly volume, The Bird Watching Answer Book, by the Cornell Lab’s science editor, Laura Erickson.
This handy little reference answers real life questions that have been sent to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology by birders of all levels from across North America. Erickson’s expert answers give readers the companionship of a professional ornithologist as they observe their avian companions. The book’s tone is friendly and accessible, even as the answers demonstrate a tremendous depth and breadth of knowledge.
Many questions help birders keep their feathered friends safe and healthy — from the baby bird found lying on the sidewalk, to the flocks whose migration patterns can be disrupted by human activity. Some questions address bird quirks and curiosities, while others get to the truth about common myths, such as whether throwing rice at weddings is harmful to birds or whether albatrosses can actually stay airborne for two years. For every question, Erickson provides an answer that is practical, engaging, entertaining, and astute.

The Bird Watching Answer Book: Everything You Need to Know to Enjoy Birds in Your Backyard and Beyond
This is a lovely book, filled with very interesting information. I knew I wanted to offer food to the birds, but felt concerned about negative comments I had heard about this practice. This book resolves all of these issues for me. And it provides information about how to feed the birds without harming them: keeping the seed clean and disease free, for example. A lot of things I did not know about.
In addition, there’s a lot of information that makes me appreciate birds even more. Intriguing info about mating, caring for their young, migrating, intelligence, how they sing, feathers and how they fly…
On a more mundane level, this is a lovely looking book. It’s small (about 6″ by 4.5″)yet satisfyingly hefty (about 1″ thick.) It’s attractively bound, with a shiny cover and a textured, matte spine. It’s a great little book in so many ways. Well done! The Bird Watching Answer Book: Everything You Need to Know to Enjoy Birds in Your Backyard and Beyond (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)

This little book sure packs a punch! It is small when you first see it, but open it up, and it is just chock-full of advice pertaining to our sweet little feathered friends. Wow! I was impressed! You will feel like you have come away from this book knowing quite a bit more than you did before you dug into it! I have been into birding for quite awhile now, yet,I was surprised to learn things that I never even knew before! It is a nice addition to your “birding library”….so glad I got it! Plus….you can assist friends and neighbors, when they are confounded about a birding “issue”!

Laura Erickson has done it again! This is a great resource for birding with kids and also for adults to answer those questions that always come up. Written in an easy to read question and answer format, Erickson covers bird migration, behavior, flight, backyard birds, conservation, and more. It’s also small enough to fit in your pocket right next to your field guide.
I became a fan of Laura Erickson with 101 Ways to Help Birds and she has continued her mission of giving the best information available with this new book.
