How to attracts bird to an apartment balcony with no trees around?
I got a suet bird feeder and attached it to the railing of my balcony-no birds yet. Online it says to attach them to trees HOWEVER there are no trees around my balcony. How can I get the birds to come? I used an all year around no melt suet cake in the feeder.

woodpeckers are mainly the only ones that like suet,no trees no woodpeckers,,put oily sunflower seeds out and water,i use a heated dog dish for the h20,,may take awhile for the birds to find it,,dont waste your $ on bird seed mix,i have been feedind the birds for 30 years, they love oily sunflower seeds
It takes a while for the birdies to discover food in a place where there previously was none. Be patient Hon—they’ll come eventually. A great many social birds enjoy suet: downy woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice, and nuthatches.
You may wish to hang a variety of feeders too encourage the birds even more. We have not only suet feeders, but sunflower and peanut feeders too.
One suggestion—if you can get hold of a three or four-foot tree branch, try lashing it to your balcony railing for a while. The birds will use it for a landing-pad. Later, after the birds know thy’ll get fed there, you can discard it if you want.

between suet, grape jelly, peanut butter, oranges and seed. you should be collecting a ton of birds to your yard. since i don’t know what birds you want to come its hard to say what to put out. http://birdtablenews.com/2009/01/what-birds-like-to-eat-home-cooking/

It may take awhile to attract suet eating birds. The first thing I would try would be putting water out to attract the birds. It is the one thing that really gets a birds attention. At this time of the year, they really need it for bathing. They have to keep clean in order to stay warm. You can use a clay saucer that goes under a pot. The clay ones are not slippery. I would also put a saucer out with mixed bird seed. Once you attract the seed eating birds, other types will come in to see what is going on. You may find in time you need more of one type of seed than another. I add extra sunflower and cracked corn to mine. I also have hummingbird feeders which also are good for orioles that pass through. You will find that some birds will stay around all year while others are just there for the summer or the winter. I have everything from hummers to hawks. They are a constant source of pleasure and amusement. Good luck.
